A kanji character is used to make the name of Chiba Prefecture in Japanese, and it has two parts. The first word,, means "thousand." The second word,, means "leaves." The name comes from an old kuni no miyatsuko, or regional command office. It was called the Chiba Kuni no Miyatsuko. The name came from a branch of the Taira clan that moved to the area in what is now Chiba City in the late Heian period. The branch of the Taira changed its name and became the Chiba clan. They had a lot of power over the area of the prefecture until the Azuchi-Momoyama era. Assembly of Prefectural Governors, a group of early Meiji-era prefectural governors, chose the name "Chiba" when they formed the prefecture in 1873. They met to decide the structure of local and regional government in Japan. There are two characters in Tokyo and Chiba that can both be pronounced "kei" and "yo." They make up the compound word Keiyo, which refers to the Tokyo-Chiba area. Keiyo Line, Keiyo Road, Keiyo Line, and so on:
