About Marche

A region of Italy called Marche is one of the twenty that make up Italy. In English, the area is sometimes called the Marches. The region is in the middle of Italy. It is bordered by Emilia-Romagna to the north, Tuscany to the west, Umbria to the southwest, Abruzzo and Lazio to the south, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Only river valleys and a small strip of land on the coast are flat. The land is mostly hilly.

There is a train line that runs from Bologna to Brindisi that runs along the entire coast. It was built in the 1800s. Even today, the mountainous nature of the region still makes it difficult to travel north and south, except by twisting roads over the passes, which are very difficult to drive through. When Raphael was born, Urbino was one of the most important cities in the region. It was also one of the most important places in Renaissance history.
