People in the Soviet army administration in Allied-occupied Germany made Saxony-Anhalt in July 1945, after World War II. They took the former Prussian Province of Saxony and the Free State of Anhalt and made them into the new state. In 1949, Saxony-Anhalt became part of the German Democratic Republic. In 1952, Saxony-Anhalt was broken up into the districts of Halle and Magdeburg, with the city of Torgau joining the district of Leipzig. Reuniting Germany in 1990 led to the state of Saxony-Anhalt being reformed and becoming one of the new states in Germany.

Saxony-Anhalt has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany. It has a lot of cultural history.
