Stara Zagora is a province in south-central Bulgaria. It used to be called the Stara Zagora okrug, but that name was changed. It is named after the city of Stara Zagora, which is the sixth-largest town in the country. The province has a total area of 5,151.1 km2 (1,988.9 sq mi). It is made up of 11 municipalities with a total population of 350,925 people as of December 2009.
Coal is made there in the southeast part of the province. It is on the edge of Radnevo Municipality. Before 1949, parts of Kardzhali Province were part of the province that is now called Kardzhali Province.
