Rrethi I Elbasanit was one of the 36 districts of Albania that were dissolved in July 2000 and replaced by 12 counties. It was replaced by 12 new counties. People lived there in 2001, and it had an area of 1,290 km2 (500 sq mi) People lived there, and its capital was the city of Elbasan. It was in the middle of the country. People living in Elbasan County now have to live in Elbasan, Belsh, and Crrik.
Fourth in population: Elbasan is the capital of Elbasan County and Elbasan Municipality. It is also the fourth-largest city in the country. It is in central Albania, near the Skanderbeg Mountains and the Myzeqe Plain. It is to the north of the river Shkumbin.
The Albanian name comes from the Ottoman Turkish il-basan, which means "big" ("the fortress").
